Protection Guru has announced the appointment of Steve Davey as head of specialist distribution to “provide additional support” for advisers.

In the newly created role, Davey, who will report to chief commercial officer Jason Green, will focus on offerings to support advisers serving the protection market.

Protection Guru founder, Ian McKenna, explained: “We are developing specialist solutions to help wealth and mortgage advisers write more protection as it is only with support and engagement of these firms that we can fully address the protection gap.

“Consumer duty requires that, if advisers identify a protection need, they either address it themselves, or refer it.

“The protection industry has not always presented itself as user friendly for wealth or mortgage advisers but an unprotected mortgage or an income will create a very poor consumer outcome in the case of death of serious illness.

“Our objective is to provide additional support and other resources for advisers looking at these needs.”

Davey will also help develop Protection Guru’s research, learning, and development resources available to participating advisers up and down the country as well as dedicated tools specifically designed for advisers providing protection advice at scale.

Speaking on his appointment, Davey was positive about the opportunity to “assist brokerages with improving the quality of their advice to their customers”.

He added: “Protection Guru have a suite of solutions available to advisers to assist them with giving better advice, which in turn will result in better client outcomes.”

Davey joins Protection Guru with over four years of experience at a leading protection specialist, where for the last 18 months he was head of protection and general insurance.

Davey’s experience in this area was praised by McKenna who said that appointing someone who has “walked many miles in the shoes of a volume protection adviser” and “understands what can really make a difference to the business they write” is “crucial”.
